GIVE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM SOME MUSCLE

August 18, 2014 By Paul Blaser

Did you know that your immune system works around the clock patrolling every area of your body? It attacks and destroys alien, useless or dangerous things inside you. These “things” can include bacteria, viruses, splinters, dirt, dead cells, even cancer cells.

Breast cancer cells start out as normal body cells, but they begin to grow out of control because of an abnormal gene. The immune system plays a major role in limiting the development of these abnormalities, often before cancer has a chance to grow. This gets rid of many cancerous cells before they can do any harm. Damaged, precancerous cells may be a constant presence, but an ever-alert immune system takes them out and protects us from many assaults of cancer that never get beyond the very earliest stage.” (1)

So imagine what it would be like if you could “tune” up the intensity of your immune system?

YOUR BODY’S DEFENSES

Our patient Dave keeps his immune system boosted on a weekly basis with chiropractic adjustments!

Our patient Dave keeps his immune system boosted on a weekly basis with chiropractic adjustments!

Your body has an arsenal that protects you. Among them, your skin and mucus membranes create a physical barrier to invasion; your digestive juices dissolve germs; urine cleans your urinary tract; and skin secretions kill many germs when you’re alive. Fevers fight off microorganisms; swelling helps wash the system; special cells attack and destroy intruders: macrophages (important cells of the immune system that are formed in response to an infection or accumulating damaged or dead cells), T-cells, killer cells, lymphocytes, antibodies and others, each with its own special (designed) way of defending you against the bad guys. You also have an internal defense industry that produces your bone marrow, spleen, thymus, tonsils, adenoids, appendix and lymph nodes. These all give you lots of high quality weapon systems to defend your body.

BOOSTING IMMUNE FUNCTION THROUGH DIET AND EXERCISE

Diet can have a profound effect on your immune health. It turns out that eating some pretty surprising nutrients will help keep your immune system on guard. You can ensure your body and immunity run more efficiently by adding lots of colourful servings of fruits and veggies to your daily meals, as well as taking in plenty of water. Vitamins such as A, B-6, C and E; Beta-carotene; copper; zinc and selenium have all been shown to have immune-enhancing abilities. Adding certain foods to your diet such as beef, lamb, spinach, pumpkin seeds, cashews, beans and mushrooms (especially shiitake, maitake, and reishi) can benefit you in receiving a hefty quantity of zinc to give your immunity a punch. Probiotics, or the “live active cultures” found in yogurt, are healthy bacteria that keep the gut and intestinal tract free of disease-causing germs while garlic contains the active ingredient allicin, which also fights infection and bacteria. Oats and barley contain beta-glucan, a type of fiber with antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities more potent than echinacea. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of Vitamin A as are carrots, kale and squash. Vitamin C, another immune booster, can be found in yellow bell peppers, guavas, dark green leafy vegetables, kiwi, broccoli, citrus fruits and berries. Dr. Linus Pauling, a two time winner of the Nobel Prize, says this:

The potency of vitamin C and other vitamins is explained by the new understanding that they function principally by strengthening the natural protective mechanisms of the body, especially the immune system”. (2)

Doctors have also found that exercise can also stimulate your immune system by providing a boost to the cells in your body that are assigned to attack bacteria. These cells appear to work more slowly in people who don’t exercise than in those who do. As a result, if you exercise, your immune system is better equipped to handle bacteria that could cause you to become sick.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE IMPROVES IMMUNE FUNCTION

While all these other immune boosters are great, there is something that many people don’t realize and that is that you can boost your immune system by up to 400% with chiropractic care!

If your spine is out of its healthy position, (what we chiropractors call a “subluxation”) it can cause a breakdown in communication with the brain and your body’s immune system, resulting in fatigue, lowered immunity and immune problems. When my patients feel run down or are feeling the onset of a cold, stomach virus, or flu symptoms, they will always schedule extra adjustments to increase their bodies defense. They often remark how they seem to recover faster after receiving more frequent chiropractic care. Recent scientific developments now lend support to the idea that chiropractic correction of the subluxation can aid the immune responses of the body by reducing nerve interference.

Defend against flu bugA study done by Dr. Ronald Pero, chief of cancer prevention at New York Preventative Medical Institute found that people who receive regular chiropractic adjustments can have between 200% and 400% stronger immune systems than those not receiving chiropractic care. What was also discovered was a massive 48% boost in immune function of AIDS patients after only 6 months of chiropractic adjustments. (3)

Another study was done to measure the effect a chiropractic adjustment has on the immune system. Blood was taken from each of the test patients 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after their adjustments. These results were compared to blood tests of patients who received placebo adjustments. The immune response from those who received the real adjustment were significantly higher after their treatments than those who received the sham adjustments. (4)

Keeping your spine healthy under chiropractic care is one of the best ways of keeping your immune system functioning at its optimum level, and restoring your health is what we here at Blaser Chiropractic are all about. So don’t just limit your chiropractic care to aches and pains. Make chiropractic a part of you and your family’s weekly wellness strategy and give your immune system some added muscle!

Chiropractic Care Can Help Sports Injuries Heal Faster

July 21, 2014 By Paul Blaser

Summer is a busy time for sports injuries. One can find themselves suffering with tennis elbow, runner’s knee or painful sprains just to name a few. Here at Blaser Chiropractic we’ve had significant success treating sports injury patients with chiropractic care. Treating a patient with chiropractic adjustments is also a non-surgical way of dealing with the underlying cause of the injury. According to Murfreesboro, Tennessee chiropractor Dr. Wesley Stewart,

There are nearly as many types of sports injuries as there are sports.  The good news  is that for the vast majority of these injuries, chiropractic care can truly make a big difference. Whether it’s treating lower back pain or relieving shoulder pain, chiropractic adjustments help to restore proper alignment to the spine.  Adjustments are also beneficial for treating extremity sprains and strains of the ankles, wrists, knees, and elbows.

Our patient Mike Eden is an athlete who benefits from his chiropractic care.

In receiving chiropractic care, our athletic patients have discovered that current injuries heal faster. They also learn how to reduce the risk for future sports injuries.  Repetitive motions can also be a common cause for different sports injuries, such as tennis elbow.  These motions can put strain on the elbow tendons and result in chronic pain and inflammation.  As well, many athletes don’t realize that a spinal misalignment (subluxation) may be triggering the improper movement that’s causing the pain to begin with.   Dr. Stewart states,

I always tell my patients that in order to fully recover, it is essential to not only relieve the pain, but treat the underlying injury.  That’s what chiropractic does.

Many sports injury cases involve spinal or other musculoskeletal misalignments so our athletes find adjustments provide a welcome relief for those pinched nerves that may be aggravating shoulder, neck or back pain.   Dr. Stewart continues to say,

If anyone can understand a sport injury, Dr. Paul can!

If anyone can understand a sport injury, Dr. Paul can!

Being injured while playing sports is a very frustrating experience.  The good news is that sports  injuries do not  have to keep you out of the game.  A proactive approach to injury rehabilitation can get you  quickly healed and safely active once again.

So whether you are a professional athlete, a weekend warrior or just enjoy your sports  activities, chiropractic is beneficial to help you not only heal from injuries, but also helps you  reach the health and fitness goals you aspire to.  For more on this area and how adjustments can  benefit you as an athlete,  please visit  Athletes and Performance in the  Services section of our website.

In addition to treating sports injuries, we also provide family wellness care and drug-free back  pain relief.

Blaser Chiropractic is dedicated to helping you achieve your health and wellness objectives.

Carrying Baggage Well

Dr. Paul Blaser's team shares about carrying luggage

In the bustle of packing for vacation or for a business trip, you can get easily carried away and pack everything but the kitchen sink into your suitcase and carry-on. But, over-packed luggage and improper lifting and carrying techniques are common causes of injury to your back, neck and shoulders.

Many of these injuries can be avoided with a little pre-planning.

Choosing Your Luggage:

When shopping for new luggage, look for something sturdy, lightweight and high-quality. If it’s too heavy to lift when it’s empty, don’t buy it! Choose one that rolls easily and where you’re not straining to push or pull it.

A good quality backpack is excellent as a carry-on because when worn properly they can evenly distribute weight. Make sure it has adjustable, padded shoulder straps and a waist strap to minimize the bag’s movement.

Packing Your Luggage:

Choose and pack your luggage carefully; packing only what you absolutely need! Remember the larger and heavier the case, the more strain it will place on your neck, back and shoulders. Make sure whatever you use as your carry-on doesn’t weigh more than 10 to 15 percent of your body weight. Keep the contents of your carry-on to a minimum, put heavier items at the bottom and make efficient use of the bag’s pockets.

Lifting And Carrying Your Luggage:

Even if your suitcase has wheels, lifting your luggage can’t always be avoided. Reduce your risk of injury by moving slowly and, whenever possible, breaking the lifting action into smaller parts. For example, when loading your suitcase into the trunk of a car, try lifting it first onto a chair or step-stool, then lifting it into the trunk.
When lifting, get close to your luggage and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend at the knees and let your leg muscles – not your back – do the lifting! Avoid twisting motions; instead, turn your feet in the direction you are headed and turn your entire body in that direction.

Remember

  • Don’t carry heavy luggage for long periods of time.
  • Carry lighter items in each hand rather than a single heavy item on one side.
  • If using a duffel or shoulder bag, switch sides often to reduce the strain on your back, neck and shoulders.

Injuries that result from improper lifting and carrying a heavy load don’t just affect your vacation, they often become chronic. If you are experiencing pain after your travels be sure to give us a call at 519-653-1020 as soon as you return! Injuries are often quicker to heal when treated as early as possible.

From all of us here at Blaser Chiropractic, have a great and safe summer vacation!

What’s Your P.B.?

June 2, 2014 By Paul Blaser

“Doc, I’ve got 2 new P.B.’s this past month – one at the All Ontario’s and the other at the Canadian Finals…”, beams yet another runner with a sparkle of both joy and amazement.
“That’s awesome……..let’s adjust your spine.”

If you’re wondering, ‘P.B.’ stands for ‘Personal Best’. If you’re a competitive athlete, no explanation is necessary. Athletic performance is based on many factors such as hard training, discipline, coaching, diet, nutritional factors, mental attitude and optimum nerve potentials. According to Dorland’s Medical Dictionary, the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue and organ in the body. Simply put, an optimally functioning nerve system produces better body performance. For example, does a race car perform better with spark plugs that work at 85%, 95% or 99% efficiency?

Chiropractic enhances nerve integrity with each and every adjustment.
Is it any wonder that world caliber athletes such as Donovan Bailey, Bruno Surrey and Dan O’Brien are under regular chiropractic care and get adjusted prior to every major race? Absolutely not!!! They obviously value the impact chiropractic has on overall body performance.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANot everyone has to be an olympic caliber athlete to benefit from chiropractic. Any athlete who wants to enhance personal performance can benefit. You may run 2km for the first time in your life, or you may complete your 20th marathon. No matter what your level, chiropractic can give your athletic endeavours an edge. I’m reminded of my mother-in-law Gloria when she completed her first 5K run at the Toronto ScotiaBank Waterfront Marathon. It was her way of celebrating her 70th birthday by facing a challenge and achieving a goal that claimed age is just a number. It took courage, discipline and regular chiropractic care that brought her into 6th place out of the 49 in her age category (3rd out of all the women)! Her first run! I can’t tell you how proud I was of her, and what an inspiration she is!

Now your ‘Personal Best’ may be defined in two ways:

1 – Doing something that you have never accomplished before in your life.
OR
2 – Completing a set distance in your best time ever.

Once again, train hard, be disciplined, ‘fuel’ up properly, have the right attitude and maintain an optimal nerve system. I just love seeing the joy and excitement of yet another patient (fellow athlete) telling me about their new P.B.!!

Sincerely,
Dr. Paul

P.S.: I just finished writing this article and my very next patient told me about her 2 new P.B.’s this past week!!! Way to go!!!
